Director: Jesse Eisenberg. USA / Poland 2024, 90 mins, 15. Content advice
‘The movie is so entertaining that you barely notice the melancholy shadow that starts to creep over it; that’s when you realise you’re in the hands of an expert but decidedly unshowy filmmaker…close to miraculous’, Time
In this poignant comedy drama blending sharp humour with genuine emotional depth, two estranged cousins, the neurotic, reserved, responsible family man David (Jesse Isenberg) and the jittery, irrepressible, extrovert Benji, go on a Holocaust tour in Poland to honour their Jewish grandmother and explore their own back-story. Through the two characters and their occasionally explosive bond, rich layers of their relationship to each other and to their history are uncovered during their charged journey with their diverse fellow tour members.
‘Eisenberg’s work as a filmmaker here is very sharp, never taking the cheap shot … the result is a poignant treasure.’, UK Film Review
